The oil filter keeps the oil in your engine clear of larger contaminants, like soot deposits or wear particle debris and that boulder you ran over last week. Ok, maybe the oil filter can't help you with the boulder, but whenever you go for an oil change, it is a great idea to replace the filter at the same time in order to make sure that everything can run smoothly. Your manual may suggest installing a new oil filter every other oil change, but by swapping both the oil and filter each time you do the service; it's an inexpensive way to protect your bike's internal parts.
